What to pack in your gear bag.
January 13, 20261. You Don’t Need Experience
Many guests are first-time riders. Rentals are beginner-friendly, and you’ll receive a full orientation before heading out. Confidence comes quickly. And your Arluk Adventures Guide will know your experience level beforehand.
2. You’ll Be Shown How Everything Works
Before you ride, you’ll learn the basics—throttle, braking, steering, and stopping. Our guides explain everything clearly and answer questions, so you feel comfortable before moving. The ride into the lodge is an easy pace and perfect for a first timer.
3. Dressing Properly Makes All the Difference
Warm layers, insulated boots, gloves, and eye protection are essential. Helmets are mandatory in Newfoundland, and we’ll supply a checklist for your group prior to arrival, to ensure everyone is comfy. Remember, cotton is a horrible base layer because if it get wet, it’s not going to dry and you’ll become cold the further you get into the day. You’re looking for a base layer that will dry.

4. It’s Easier Than It Looks
Modern snowmobiles are stable and intuitive. Most riders feel comfortable within minutes, especially when starting at a relaxed, guided pace. This is where the initial ride into the lodge is ideal. The trail will be wide and smooth. You’ll quickly get comfortable with the gas (throttle) and the brake. And you’ll be reminded that on the bigger/wider trails, you’ll need to keep to the right because they are two-way trails.
5. Speed Is Never the Goal
This isn’t about going fast—it’s about enjoying the ride and the scenery. Guides set the pace, routes are chosen for comfort, and there’s time to stop, warm up, and take photos. Your guide will be checking in for a number of key factors; too cold, too hot, questions about your snowmobile and gauging your smile factor.
6. Safety Is Built Into the Experience
Professional guides, safety briefings, emergency planning, and communication systems are standard. Riding within your comfort zone is always encouraged. If you want to learn some new technical riding skills, we have some seasoned veterans on the Arluk Team…if you want to nail that downhill U-Turn, you have some of the best on the team.
7. You’ll Finish Wanting to Do It Again
Most first-time riders end the day smiling—and usually surprised by how natural snowmobiling feels. That’s what a memorable adventure is all about.

8. Liability Waivers Are Required
All riders must sign a liability waiver before riding. This is standard practice and helps ensure everyone understands the risks and responsibilities involved in snowmobiling. This will be the case for both enjoying your trip with Arluk Adventures and either of the trusted snowmobile partners you might procure a snowmobile from. At the end of the day, Arluk Adventures will take all measure to ensure guests are safe and that does sometimes mean your guide has to make the tough call to not venture into a zone. Most times, this will be due to inclement weather.
9. Understand the Cost Up Front
Rental pricing typically includes the snowmobile, helmet, orientation support, and route access. Optional items such as outerwear, fuel surcharges, or extended ride times may be additional—our team will explain everything clearly before you book. The key here is booking or establishing your trip dates early, to allow the Arluk Team time to help you secure the necessary rental sleds, if you need them.
10. You’re Responsible for Damage
Like any motorized rental, riders are responsible for damage caused by misuse or accidents. Optional damage protection or insurance may be available to reduce out-of-pocket costs—always ask what coverage is offered and what your responsibilities are. We highly recommend paying the small upfront fee to reduce any possible larger damage cost. This will be conducted between you and the third-party rental company.
